Introduction. India is a rapidly developing country and its infrastructure development is at an extremely large scale. In the human body, it is the DNA that controls the growth and development. But, when it comes to a city it’s the municipal authorities i.e. local government that are responsible for getting the task done. In other words, Municipal authority refers to political administration of the smallest subdivisions of a country’s territory and population.
For any construction project to be done in India, it is required to have a project sanctioning done by these municipal authorities. In order to sanction the plan, the architect prepares the layout and related data. It is later submitted for scrutiny to these municipal authorities, which either pass or reject the project proposal. With India being at its rapid pace of development, it is often found that illegal construction projects come into existence, which violate the FSI and other buildings bye-laws. On the other hand, exploitation of builders and architects at the hands of corrupt officers.
Solution to this problem is the integration of technology in governance and private construction. Implementing latest IT techniques such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a mediator and a making use of this BIM platform for sanctioning, scrutiny, execution and verification can be the solution, which is well proven in the Global market. BIM can be integrated with cloud platform and a service could be developed to receive and retain clearances from government officials, here by using Digital Signatures. In this way every required document is maintained on one platform which is secure and accessible to all authorized users.

Architecture, Engineering, Construction (AEC) is a very versatile and dynamic sector. Events, resources, processes associated with it are always unpredictable. This uncertainty invites prospectus of risks associated with it and seldom jeopardizes quality commitments made to clients at the time of entering into a lawful agreement. The sector is labor intensive and suffers highly from occupational risks and safety hazards unlike other sectors.
Unlike manufacturing sector, construction projects and associated products are always unique and diversified. These projects may be construction of an entire new facility or improvement/changes in existing facility. However, there still exists some element of similarity between the two sectors when certain packages have repetitive activities involved, like: (1) Casting of columns, beams & slabs of subsequent floor levels a high rise residential tower; (2) Casting of pre-tensioned girders for a long span bridge, and many such cases. Hence, proficient techniques which are being implemented as part of Production Management System (Maris et al. 2016) in manufacturing hubs can be aptly deployed here as well.

Augmented reality(AR) is one such technology which enables us to interact with the real environment. The recent Apple keynote gave us a real sneak peek into how common augmented reality would be in the future. 10years back Apple showed us a device, which revolutionised the way how we interact with technology. And now, 10 years later, there is a high probability for AR to bring on a new revolution on how we interact with the digital world. Some of the readers of this article might have a question in their minds, “what is Augmented reality?“ Augmented reality is the real-time integration of digital information with the user’s environment. Unlike virtual reality, which creates a totally artificial environment, augmented reality uses the existing environment and overlays additional information on top of it. An explanation of augmented reality cannot be complete mentioning the reality virtuality continuum. Figure 1 represents the reality virtuality continuum as proposed by Milgram et al.(1995). It defines augmented reality in a space between a completely modeled and an un-modeled world i.e. in between a real and virtual environment.

In India, Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operation (AECO) industry is the second largest industry after agriculture industry. Indian AECO industry employs more than 35 million people, has second highest inflow of foreign direct investment after services sector, and contributes to about 11.1% of India’s GDP (Mohideen 2015). Recent initiatives set by Indian government, such as Make in India, is serving to grow the AECO industry. There are many mega projects undertaken recently, e.g. high-end road ways or express ways, metro train projects and proposed bullet train project between two cities of India, i.e. Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The initiation of these projects necessitates focus on various technical and non-technical aspects along with technologies, especially the infrastructure for these initiatives (Amarnath et al. 2016).
